Ramonda, Shuri, Okoye (Danai Gurira) and new tech-genius ally Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) will do whatever it takes to protect Wakanda. But a new threat looms in the form of Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejía), the ruler of an ancient underwater civilization. Queen Mother Ramonda (Angela Bassett) takes on his leadership role, while Shuri (Letitia Wright) researches a way to bring back the heart-shaped herb that can anoint a new Black Panther. Much of the film is marked by grief for King T’Challa. Director Ryan Coogler wanted to find a way to honor his friend and continue the franchise in the sequel, Wakanda Forever. The first Black Panther movie was a smash hit and a critical darling, and a lot of its success rested on Boseman’s capable shoulders. The tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman left a big hole in the world and in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Stars: Katia Krafft, Maurice Krafft, Miranda July (narrator) From the moment you learn that some volcanoes are basically already-lit explosives - it’s just the length of the fuse we don’t know - Fire of Love will have you entranced with its amazing story. The Kraffts dedicated their lives to studying volcanoes, doing their best to spread awareness of the danger inside these mountains. Miranda July’s emotive and heartfelt narration may not be for everyone (though it worked for yours truly), but Fire of Love is the kind of movie that could even melt an icy heart. The Kraffts, constantly documenting their own work, basically treated every trek as if they were The Beatles on tour, allowing you to see their dangerous work from angles that make you feel like you’re following them from volcano to volcano. But Fire of Love is an utterly impressive documentary because of its sheer amount of footage. Not only because Katia and Maurice Krafft are a pair of volcano experts who managed to find each other and fall in love, with a match made in magma. As is the ongoing mission of Pixar, WALL-E conjures romantic truth.Fire of Love is a movie that you’ll be shocked exists. ![]() We’ll see if humanity can get its act together, but even if we’re destined to decimate the planet and float around in hover chairs on a rocket-powered shopping mall for the rest of our days, we’ll always have WALL-E and EVE dancing among the stars, an ode to the beauty that once was. There’s the dystopian tale of a worker bot tidying up a busted, deserted world that could easily stand alone as a short there’s the love story of two robots, a pure blend of Asimov and Disney and there’s the rescue mission, a galactic journey that whisks WALL-E to the Axiom mothership for an encounter with a HAL 9000-like AI. Pete VolkĪndrew Stanton’s science fiction odyssey, set in 2185, is a triptych of disparate stories glued together with feels. When she accidentally provokes a minor act of rebellion, Serafina is told she is wicked by the strict nun (Alba Rohrwacher, Alice’s sister and an award-winning actress) - something the young girl internalizes, to wonderful and unexpected results.Ī gorgeous film about childhood and rebellion shot beautifully in 35mm (including one of the most gorgeous cakes you will ever see on film), Le Pupille is one of the best movies of 2022, no matter the length. One girl in particular, Serafina, is shy and isn’t as rebellious as some of the others. Le Pupille, which premiered at Cannes and became the first Disney Plus-released short to be nominated for an Oscar, follows a group of young girls at a strict Italian Catholic school during World War II. The movie is available to stream on both Hulu and Disney Plus, and is one of the most delightful 30-plus minutes you could possibly spend this year. ![]() Award-winning filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher ( Happy as Lazzaro) was recently nominated for an Oscar for her excellent short film Le Pupille, produced by Alfonso Cuarón ( Children of Men). ![]()
